In medieval times the castle of Minucciano belonged to the Malaspina family; in 1231, as part of a division between brothers, it was assigned to Conrad, one of the members of that family; later, in 1346, it was sold by Spinetta Malaspina to the Republic of Florence; it came into possession of the Republic of Lucca after 1369 which kept it until the fall of Paolo Guinigi. In 1439 it returned to Florence until 1441 when it was the domain of the Republic of Lucca until 1847; in 1837 a violent earthquake damaged the tower of the castle causing the collapse of some houses in the ancient center.
